When buying a business in Spain it's much easier to buy an existing business than it is to start a new one. The paperwork for taking over an existing business is complicated enough without having to start from scratch. It's also less risky to take on a thriving business than to start something new.

Be aware, however, that buying an existing business as a going concern is not easy. Most people don't simply sell successful businesses without a good reason…at least not at a cost-effective price. Also, the Spanish are not yet in the habit of buying and selling businesses, which are generally usually passed on from generation to generation.

The reason there are so many businesses for sale in Spain is that many of the current owners are failing and desperately need to sell. Even successful businesses have taken a lot of stamina on the part of the proprietors in order to become successful - new owners can't expect to just take on where their predecessors left off.

"The book was well worth the cash I spent on it - I read it the day I received it and found it invaluable. My wife and I are planning to move to Spain to live and work - your book answered many of the questions we had and some we hadn't even thought of. Thanks!"
Steve Moore, company director, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.

If you don't speak fluent Spanish then you'll be targeting the English speaking community. So make sure there's enough potential customers in your chosen area to make your business sustainable…and make sure you're offering what they really want. Rent somewhere in the area first to get the feel of it and do some vital market research. You'll find plenty of businesses advertised privately in the main tourist areas, including the Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol.

Check the local English language newspaper for adverts and look out for "se vende" (for sale) signs on business premises. You could save yourself thousands of pounds in agents fees and as long as you use a good lawyer there's no reason why you shouldn't negotiate a private purchase directly with the owner.

If you really want to have a fair chance of succeeding, start the sensible way and get professional independent advice. You MUST use a lawyer and it's also a good idea to have your proposed business evaluated by independent financial advisers with specialist knowledge of Spain.

A good financial adviser will be able to provide the following services:

  • Advice on finding an appropriate business if you haven't already got one in mind
  • A realistic estimate as to how much it will really cost to get your business up and running and evaluate your prospects of success
  • Check the legality of the business you want to buy and identify what is needed if all the necessary paperwork is not in order
  • Project its low and high turnover capabilities
  • Define the running costs to achieve profit projections
  • Advise you what a fair price should be, including any stock, fixtures and fittings
  • Help you to know how much money you will need to cover your first year's costs
  • Estimate what profits, if any, can be realistically expected in your first year
  • Make sure you're aware of your legal obligations so you avoid fines, embargoes and even closure
  • Guide you through all the steps you need to take to safeguard and protect your investment - no matter how large or small this may be
  • Check local requirements and licences needed for operating your business
  • Obtain an opening licence, trading licence and operating licence from the relevant bodies such as the town hall, tourist board (where appropriate) and tax office
